MusicalAmerica - Tanglewood Rolls Out Six Weeks of Live Programming

April 8, 2021 | By Susan Elliott,
Musical America
With only 50 percent of its usual offerings, the six-week Tanglewood Music Festival will kick off July 10 with an all-Beethoven program including the Fifth Symphony, a nod to the Festival’s original opening concert in 1937, since the event marks a reopening after a year of silence in the Berkshires (and 16 months without live performances by the full BSO). The grounds will open, free to the public, on June 15.
Also on opening concert, with Music Director Andris Nelsons on the podium, is the Fifth Piano Concerto with Festival favorite Emanuel Ax and the Overture to
The Creatures of Prometheus. ....

LENOX The Boston Symphony Orchestra today unveiled its plans for an abbreviated six-week summer season at Tanglewood with performances with a number of familiar faces returning to the Koussevitzky Music Shed.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the BSO last year to cancel the 2020 season. The BSO had not skipped a season in the Berkshires since World War II when no performances were staged between 1942 and 1945.
In a typical season, Tanglewood draws 340,000 people and generates more than $100 million in economic activity annually to the Berkshires. ....

The six-week lineup announced Thursday features all the usual suspects. Clockwise from bottom left: Andris Nelsons, John Williams, Yo-Yo Ma, Keith Lockhart, and Emanuel Ax.
Last summer, Tanglewood opened its gates to the public just three days a week, with the scene behind its tall walls remaining eerie and silent. No strains of melodies floated across the grassy lawns by day. The Koussevitzky Music Shed sat empty and dark by night, panels displaying names from the region’s high school class of 2020 who never got to toss their caps into the air. Even now, it feels almost dangerous to hope for anything more. ....
