MICHEL MARTIN, HOST: It s been a rough year for just about everybody - parents, business owners, medical personnel, folks in care homes. But right now, we want to talk about teenagers. This is a time of life when they should be spreading their wings, taking on more responsibility, getting more independence, maybe getting ready to leave home. But instead, for many, if not most, life has been on hold. They ve had to stick close to home, miss sports, stop seeing friends. And now health care providers are telling us that this is taking a toll on their mental health. While there isn t a lot of hard data, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that through most of 2020, the proportion of mental health-related pediatric emergency admission was 31% higher than it was in 2019. We wanted to hear more about what the last year has been like for teens, and we wanted to talk about ways to help them through it, so we ve called a familiar voice, NPR education correspondent ....
