When Oslyn Rodriguez visited her home country of Guyana in 2015, she thought it would be a normal trip.
“I went for what I thought was a regular family reunion,” she said.
But on that trip, Rodriguez discovered her life’s mission – serving children in need.
“I was confronted with extreme poverty in Guyana,” she said. “I felt like I needed to do something to help the children in that community. What I saw were children who lacked basic necessities that we have here in America. And I felt like I needed to do something to help those children.” ....

Christmas in a Backpack begins with packing parties


Backpack International
Christmas in a Backpack will look a little different this year. Due to COVID-19, Backpack International had to suspend its community-wide event. Last year, volunteers from all over Lee County gathered and helped pack 600 backpacks for kids in East Alabama, Guyana and Belize. Although the community can’t gather in a large group this year, there are still safe alternatives to give back to others. 
This year, Backpack International is hosting private packing parties for groups. This is a wonderful opportunity for a small/youth group, staff, family or any group to participate in a service project. The organization is now booking parties for groups with a maximum of 10 people. Although this is a volunteer opportunity, Backpack International is asking for a minimum donation of $5 per person. The organization will provide homemade baked goods and hot cocoa/tea/cider/coffee. It is also asking people to donate supplies such as bath towels, deodorant, too ....
