Microsoft goes large with fifth Azure region in China


Will go live in 2022 and ‘effectively double’ capacity in the Middle Kingdom

Microsoft has revealed it plans to open a fifth Azure region in China.
The forthcoming “China North 3” region will “effectively double the capacity of Microsoft’s intelligent cloud portfolio in China in the coming years” says the software giant’s announcement.
As required by Chinese law, Microsoft won’t own or operate the new bit barn. That job falls to 21Vianet, the Chinese company that Microsoft has worked with behind the Great Firewall since 2014.
Microsoft says the new bit barn will be open sometime in the year 2022 and that the doubling of capacity will happen “in the coming years”. ....

Microsoft has launched availability for its Azure VMware Solution (AVS) in its Southeast Asia (Singapore) cloud region.
The vendor’s Azure VMware Solution is designed to  in Microsoft’s own words enable users to “seamlessly extend or migrate their existing on-premises VMware applications to Azure without the cost, effort or risk of re-architecting applications or retooling operations .
Since announcing initial availability in US East, US West, West Europe and Australia, the company has made the solution available in the Japan East, UK South, Canada Central, North US, and North Europe (Dublin) Azure regions. ....

An unfortunate Exchange
CVE-2021-26855, CVE-2021-26857, CVE-2021-26858, and CVE-2021-27065, otherwise known as the set of vulnerabilities in Exchange on-premises servers that were used by state-sponsored Chinese hacking group HAFNIUM in its attacks this week (and the days prior).
While news of the exploits started circulating at the beginning of the year, the vulnerability chaining did not happen until earlier this week. Microsoft has outlined a number of Indicators of Compromise (or IOCs), along with pushing out out-of-band patches for all affected Exchange on-prem servers - versions 2013 through to 2019. JFrog, the company best known for its Artifactory binary repository manager, this week announced that both Artifactory and JFrog Xray are available with native deployment templates for customers using AWS GovCloud (US) and Azure Government clouds.
JFrog bills its Artifactory as a universal software package management and container registry solution. JFrog Xray is a universal impact analysis product designed to provide continuous security and compliance management for open source security vulnerabilities and license scanning.
Both products are part of the JFrog DevOps Platform, which also includes the JFrog Pipelines universal orchestration software, the JFrog Mission Control DevOps dashboard, the JFrog Distribution release validation tool, and the JFrog Access DevOps admin tool. ....
