PHOENIX (AP) Arizona health officials on Saturday reported nearly 500 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and a dozen new deaths amid growing vaccination rates.
The state Department of Health Services reported 474 new cases, bringing the total since the pandemic began to 872,496. The 12 new deaths brought the total number tallied in Arizona to 17,459.
Daily case numbers in Arizona have ping-ponged within the 400 to 600-plus range for the past week. The number of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 rose slightly to 595 on Friday. The number of those in an ICU dipped to 188.
Pima County officials on Friday dropped their mandatory mask mandate for fully vaccinated people in line with new guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Tucson’s mayor will ask the City Council to do the same in the coming days. Mask ordinances in Phoenix and other cities remain in place but are ....

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) Employees at the New Mexico Public Education Department are completing a three-hour diversity course as part of a plan to address a court order to improve services for students of different cultural, linguistic, and income backgrounds.
The virtual training was mandated for all 234 agency employees including Education Secretary Ryan Stewart, a spokeswoman said. Repeat sessions on Thursday and Friday were open to hundreds of teachers and school leaders outside the agency who signed up voluntarily.
“In my 21 years of doing this work, it is the first time for me that state employees in the education department have been required to attend,” said training leader Sharroky Hollie, a former school teacher. ....

Bill legalizing drug-testing strips heads to Ducey's desk

PHOENIX (AP) The Arizona House has approved legislation legalizing test strips that can detect the presence of the potent opiate fentanyl and potentially help avoid deadly overdoses.
The measure already unanimously passed the Senate, so Thursday’s 48-11 House vote sends the measure to Republican Gov. Doug Ducey for his consideration.
The measure by Democratic Sen. Christine Marsh was prompted by last year’s death of her 25-year-old son, Landon Marsh.
Marsh tearfully testified during a February committee hearing on SB1486 about how her recently married son had one night of “being really stupid” with his childhood best friend. He took what he thought was a prescription pain pill that turned out to be laced with fentanyl. He had been working toward a degree in mechanical engineering when he died. ....
