Despite concerns on recent happenings, stakeholders have expressed optimism on the operation of the South-west Security Initiative, codenamed Amotekun, James Sowole writes When the six governors of the South-west states conceived the idea of establishing a regional security outfit over one year ago, it was meant to bridge the gap created between them and the security apparatus of the Federal Government. The governors, who are Chief Security Officers of their respective states, were concerned by their inability to have control over the existing security system despite mounting insecurity in their domains. They were concerned that due to the fact that all the security agencies, were established by the Federal Government, heads of various agencies in states, have to take instructions in most cases from the centre before responding to calls from their host, chief executives. These often resulted in delays in making quick critical security decisions.

Punch Newspapers Sections Olufemi Olaniyi, Ibadan The Oyo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun, has revealed the identity of its member, Kazeem Afolabi, who allegedly fired the shot that killed a commercial motorcyclist, Tosin Thomas in Ibadan on Wednesday. The Commandant of Amotekun, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (retd.),  in a statement on Thursday by the media officer of the agency, Mrs Ayolola Adedoja, said Afolabi acted outside the guideline of the security outfit and had been dismissed and handed over to the police for prosecution. The commandant said the agency regretted the loss of Thomas’s life, saying the leadership was already on touch with the family.

Amotekun corps and hunters drive herdsmen out of forest reserves in Oyo

Mrs Ayolola Adedoja, the chairman of Chairman of Amotekun Corps, Gen. Kunle Togun (retd), said the herdsmen claimed they were invited into the state by traditional rulers. While commending the hunters led by one Prophet Ojuawo, Togun urged the people of the state to support the security outfit to make it more effective. He also said Amotekun was open to criticism, adding that such criticism should not be to discourage the corps from its duty of protecting lives and property. He said, “On December 24, some herdsmen were seen at the Opara Forest Reserve in the Oke Ogun area of Oyo State. The attention of the chairman of the Amotekun corps was called to it and the Amotekun corps swung into action.
