Lagos State Government said it has commenced a two-week decontamination of 26 major poultry markets in the State against the resurgence of avian influenza (bird flu).
The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya made this announcement on Thursday and explained that the decontamination exercise was informed by the reported resurgence of the flu in Kano and Plateau States.
She noted that it was of utmost importance for the State Government to take preventive measures in order to prevent the occurrence of the flu in Lagos.
According to her, with the devastating nature of the disease to the poultry industry as well as its serious socio-economic impact on the livelihood of farmers and other poultry value chain operators, it was not only imperative to curtail its resurgence, it is of utmost importance to act fast.

Lagos disinfects bird markets ahead of Christmas
Lagos State Government on Monday began five-day disinfection and decontamination of 33 live bird markets across the state.
Ms Abisola Olusanya, the State’s Commissioner for Agriculture kicked off the exercise at the Awolowo Live Bird Market, Mushin.
Olusanya noted that the exercise was aimed at preventing the spread of avian influenza and other zoonotic diseases as the festive period approached and the demand for live birds increased.
She listed the live bird markets lined up for disinfection and decontamination to include those in Awolowo, Mushin, Cairo, Bolade and Olaleye.

The Lagos State Government said plans have been concluded plans in collaborating with the Kebbi State and the Federal Government through the Central bank of Nigeria to make at least 100,000 bags of LAKE rice available for residents during the Yuletide celebrations.
Meantime, the state government, on Monday, at the Awolowo Live Bird Market, Mushin kicked off a-week state–wide disinfection and decontamination of 33 major live bird markets across the state.
On the LAKE rice, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya who disclosed this to newsmen at the 2020 Sea Food Festival in Lagos, said that about 100,000 bags of 50 kg would be sold for N20,000 per bag.
