The Jefferson City Lady Jays will open up the softball season at 4 p.m. today in the Union Tournament with a young, but experienced, roster.
The Lady Jays enter the year with just two seniors but have seven returning starters from last year, which is exciting for the team.
It was a pitcher’s duel the first time they met. There was no reason to think the second time would be any different. Molly Berkey of Helias and Avrey Reynolds of Jefferson City battled again in the circle Thursday night in the Class 4 District 5 Tournament semifinals at the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex.
A loss Wednesday would have ended the season for the Jefferson City Lady Jays and the high school career of senior pitcher Avrey Reynolds. But Reynolds had other plans. Reynolds tossed a complete-game shutout in the circle with a career-high 15 strikeouts to push the third-seeded Lady Jays to a 4-0 win against the sixth-seeded Marshall Lady Owls in the first round of the Class 4 District 5 Tournament at the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex.

Avrey Reynolds pitched a three-hit shutout and Summer Branch hit a solo home run Monday, leading the Jefferson City Lady Jays to a 13-0 win in six innings against the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers in Central Missouri Activities Conference play.
