The committee is part of a major transition of American Military leadership. If confirmed as army chief of staff you will serve along side the joint chief of staffs new Service Chiefs for the navy and marine core. You will lead part of the volunteer soldiers and time and time over a decade of time in iraq. The army indured 70 of the casual casual casualties. As the nation confronts the most array of Global Crisis since the world war ii the next chief of staff of army is responsible for making sure the total army and active guard and reserve remains the most decisive land troops in the world. We have drastic reductions in defense funding and the army is going to be forceded to carry out missions with fewer dollars, soldiers and equipment. It has been reduced from 570,000 active duty personal to 490,000 troops this year and last week the army announced they would cut an additional 40000 troops reducing to 450,000. There is talks the army could decline to 420,000 troops and what is worse
Center. We provide a wide variety of enablers that support special operation. We will keep the linkage that will not break. Thank you sir. I appreciate your commitment to making sure our military men and women are able to perform the missions they are given. Thank you, mr. Chairman, and thank you general for your service to our country and your familys support of the service. You and i have had a good conversation on things and i will ask you what i ask most of the people being pointed. What do you consider the greatest threat . As a soldier and military officer, i would have to say it is russia. Russia is the only country on earth that retains the Nuclear Capability to destroy the United States. It has capability. Intent . Dont know. But the activity of russia since 2008 has been aggressive. They attacked and invaded georgia, seized the crimea and attacked into the ukraine. That is worrisome. I would also add china and north korea and isis along with iran including the recent agreemen
Seriously considered. Senator mccain has already referenced them. One is i think we have to take a hard look at overhead. The army but not just the army but the military across the board, all of the services to include department of defense are very very Large Organization with a big bureaucracy with a significant overhead. A second is acquisition. As already previously mentioned, theres a considerable amount of cost and in many cases waste in the acquisition process. We need to get that under control. And the third and final piece that i think is worth taking a look at theres a wide variety of emerging technologies that could in the outyears could lend itself to automated processes and reducing either manpower or manpower costs, compensation cost over time. Thats three big areas that would want to lock at if confirmed. We have russia creating a looming threat in europe, we have the pacific and chinas expansion or i should say increased activity there. We have the ongoing war in the mi
Commands you support as well. I have been concerned reductions across the services are going to impact the conventional source enablers that our specialop guys work with. How will you work with them on the reductions having on their capabilities . We are closely tied with the special operation committee. 80 of u. S. Special operations come from the army. So we are tightly closed. We are joined at the hip. One of the big Lessons Learned from the last 1015 years is conflict has been the synergistic affect. We will continue to work with them very, very closely. We have them integrated in the major exercise at the training center. We provide a wide variety of enablers that support special operation. We will keep the linkage that will not break. Thank you sir. I appreciate your commitment to making sure our military men and women are able to perform the missions they are given. Thank you, mr. Chairman, and thank you general for your service to our country and your familys support of the ser
That we made. Among the most contentious issues over the past two years involved the armys restructuring initiative. I understand the army has been put in a difficult position by budget reductions and over the past several years has been exploring a number of option to maximize come pat power while at the same time trying to combat costs. Congress has similarly been taking a hard look at this which is why the commission of the structure of the army was established in the ndaa. If confirmed will you comment to thoroughly reviewing the armys Aviation Restructuring Initiative and working closely with congress once the Commission Report is delivered next year to help us figure out the best path forward on Army Structure issues . Absolutely will and i look forward to reviewing the Commission Report. And what do you think are the biggest threats that should you be confirmed youll have to prepare the army to address in the coming decade . I think the armys fundamental mission of engaging in g
