Daniel, Dan (1914–1988) – Encyclopedia Virginia

Wilbur Clarence Daniel was born on May 12, 1914, in Pittsylvania County and was the son of Reuben Earl Daniel, a sharecropper, and his second wife, Georgia Lee Grant Daniel. He attended Mecklenburg County public schools until age fifteen, when he went to work as a store clerk to help support his family. In 1933 Daniel (called Clarence until adulthood, when he acquired the nickname Dan) joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in Spotsylvania County. He married Daisy Rivers Greene Fines on June 2, 1934, in Hyattsville, Maryland. The childless couple separated three years later. By 1939 Daniel had discovered that Fines’s divorce from her first husband had not been made final at the time she married Daniel. He sued for a declaration of annulment, which the Stafford County Circuit Court granted on September 16, 1939. ....

NJ's 'first lady of radio' Jessie Frees marks 70 years on the air

Jessie Frees got her first radio gig in 1951 as a New Jersey schoolgirl on a New York Times-owned station.
Seventy years later, the first lady of New Jersey s broadcast airwaves is still behind the microphone at age 88 and has no plans to sign off any time soon.
I ll never give it up, said Frees, currently in her 27th year hosting the Ask the Expert hour every Sunday morning on WMTR-AM radio in Hanover, followed by the Your New Jersey Connection political panel talk show hosted by her daughter, Julie Briggs.
Her list of A-list interview guests is endless: from Bob Hope and Helen Hayes to Tony Bennett, Tony Randall and Liberace. ....

Messages of hope delivered by alumni speakers during Averett's annual Founders' Day | News

Averett Universityâs annual Foundersâ Day event was held before an empty Pritchett Auditorium Thursday, March 11. The event was broadcast online, which opened the virtual doors for hundreds of viewers to hear alumni memories of Averett and words of encouragement for the future after a historic year.
Averett alumni Dr. James Allred â97, Dr. Angela Hairston â85 and Ms. Adrian Nester â01, â03 were the featured speakers, discussing Averettâs influence on them over the years.
Allred is a cardiac electrophysiologist specializing in implantation of cardiac devices and catheter ablation. He is actively involved in clinical research and works to bring the newest cardiac technologies to the N.C.-Triad. ....
