Utility crews were making progress restoring power to Massachusetts customers whose homes went dark during a potent wind storm that generated a 76-mile-per-hour gust in Provincetown and slowly faded away Tuesday.
Power outages tracked by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency were in excess of 30,000 customers in the morning, but by 5 p.m., the outage total declined to about 7,000 statewide.
More than 1,800 field employees and contractors are responding to a wind storm that has toppled trees and knocked down power lines. Heavy winds toppled a tree into a home, knocked the side off a Boston building and made fires hard to fight in Massachusetts Tuesday.
In Massachusetts, there were more than 45,000 customers without power as of 4 a.m., 30,000 in New Hampshire, 21,000 in Maine and 18,000 in Connecticut. Massachusetts outages were down to just over 4,077 by 7:30 p.m.
A large tree snapped and crashed into a house and garage in Westboro, causing extensive damage. There were various branches down throughout the area and trash cans rolling around the streets as the howling wind continued. ....

Power outages, a scaffolding collapse, and downed trees mark wild windstorm

A howling windstorm that brought upwards of 50 mile-per-hour wind gusts to much of Massachusetts Monday night left behind a trail of havoc, from power outages to downed trees and other damages.
In Boston, a seven-story scaffolding set, approximately 200 to 250 feet long, was “dislodged because of the wind” at a construction site on St. Alphonosus Street around 11 p.m., Boston Deputy Fire Chief Pat Nichols told WHDH.
“There was a significant amount of debris in the street,” Nichols said.
No one was around the site when the scaffolding fell, he said. No injuries were reported.
“It’s very fortunate that nobody was hurt,” Nichols told the station. “It could have been a lot worse if there was anybody around.” ....
