Louisiana AG announces arrests in alleged $1 million COVID unemployment fraud


Landry said the program’s latest alleged fraud totaled more than $1 million.
“I want to thank all of our law enforcement and agency partners who helped in our efforts,” he said. “I encourage anyone who knows of fraudulent activity related to COVID-19 unemployment benefits to report it.”
The scheme involved multiple groups across several parishes and a coordinated effort to defraud both the Louisiana and California COVID-19 unemployment programs. Members of these groups filed multiple online claims with the Louisiana Workforce Commission and the California Employment Development Department, according to the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation.

Latest job totals reflect continuing recovery in Houma-Thibodaux and across Louisiana
Houma-Thibodaux s job total was up 3,600 compared to April 2020, the first full month of COVID-19 pandemic losses, new figures show.
Houma-Thibodaux, a metro area comprised of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, had about 82,000 jobs in April, down 100 compared with March, the report shows. 
Like most of Louisiana, the area is continuing to regain jobs lost to the pandemic and related health restrictions on business and social activity.
“After a difficult year for Louisiana’s workforce and economy, we are finally turning a corner,” Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Dejoie said in a news release. The recovery is ongoing, but we will not stop fighting to get Louisianians back to work in jobs that can support their families.” ....

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - An audit conducted by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office reveals the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) paid millions of dollars in unemployment funds to prisoners.
The audit, released Monday shows the agency responsible for handling unemployment funds gave out more than $6 million in benefits to 1,195 incarcerated individuals who did not qualify for the program.
Those improper payments were made between January to November 2020. According to the findings, 92 inmates received only one week of benefits but more than a thousand inmates received more than one week of benefits.
