Defense had been the focal point for the Komets coming into Friday night. And the defense was improved, as Fort Wayne defeated the Wheeling Nailers 2-1 in front of an announced crowd of 2,419 at Memorial Coliseum.
“I was pleased from the start of the game, right till the end,” Fort Wayne coach Ben Boudreau said. “Even going back to Thursday’s practice habits, I thought we were committed to our craft, knowing we’d laid an egg (in a 4-3 loss to Wheeling) on Wednesday.” ....

The ECHL issued this news release today:
PRINCETON, N.J. The ECHL on Friday announced the following fines and suspensions resulting from ECHL Game #381, Wheeling at Fort Wayne, on May 12.
Wheeling’s Austin Fyten has been suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount under Rule #28 – Supplementary Discipline as a result of his major penalty and game misconduct for kneeing at 19:57 of the third period.
Fyten will miss Wheeling’s games at Fort Wayne tonight (May 14) and vs. Greenville (May 15 and May 16).
Wheeling’s Chad Duchesne has been suspended for seven games and fined an undisclosed amount under Rule #28 – Supplementary Discipline as result of his actions at 19:57 of the third period. ....

About the closest thing you’ll find to a certainty in the ECHL is the Komets beating the Wheeling Nailers when they play at Memorial Coliseum.
But tonight was the exception to the rule. The Nailers got a 4-3 victory over the Komets, who have won 20 of the last 24 games between the teams here.
The waning seconds saw Wheeling’s Austin Fyten knee the Komets’ Anthony Petruzzelli, setting off a melee and likely putting him in the crosshairs of ECHL discipline. The Wheeling players then engaged in a shouting match with Fort Wayne fans and the Nailers’ Chad Duchesne swiped at a fan with his stick. ....
