Parachute fails, fatal fall, 1,500 watch, Augusta, Ga., local history, Augusta International Speedway


On Labor Day Sunday in 1960, a German-born mother of two jumped out of an airplane over Augusta International Speedway and fell to her death while 1,500 watched.
Theresa Ann Morgan, 29, the wife of a commercial pilot and a pilot herself, had said she wanted to do something to stimulate interest in the motorcycle races planned that weekend at the track located near today s Diamond Lakes park.
Morgan was depicted as adventurous and competitive. In the weeks leading up to the event, she told reporters that her husband, Carl Morgan, had completed 29 jumps as a paratrooper, and she wanted to catch him. She said she had jumped from a plane once before – 3,000 feet – which she called just a warm-up. ....
