Plants use sunlight energy to convert water and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to create the sugars they need to grow. Some of these sugars, along with other compounds, are secreted in their roots where they feed soil microorganisms. As microscopic organisms feed on the carbon and incorporate it into humus, it becomes more stable and less likely to escape into the atmosphere.
