About this event Ambassador Peter Ryan and Mrs. Jane Quinn, President of the Auckland Irish Society, invite you to join them in the Auckland Irish Club from 6-8 pm on Friday, 24th September 2021 for the Auckland launch of the Defending Trinity College Dublin, Easter 1916 – Anzacs and the Rising” by Dr Rory Sweetman. Published by Four Courts Press, the book reveals how five New Zealanders, acting as the core of a small squad of colonial troops, provided a vital shield to protect Trinity College Dublin from capture during the Easter Rising of 1916. In doing so, they prevented the almost certain destruction of Ireland’s oldest university, founded in 1592. At the event, Dr Sweetman will talk about his book and the response in New Zealand to the Easter Rising and the aftermath. ....
About this Event Ambassador Peter Ryan and Mrs. Jane Quinn, President of the Auckland Irish Society, invite you to join them in the Auckland Irish Club from 6-8 pm on Friday, 28th May 2021 for a very special evening as we officially launch the Irish in Aotearoa: Mapping the Irish Community and People of Irish Heritage in New Zealand report. With a foreword from President Michael D Higgins, the report was written by Professor Sonja Tiernan of the Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Otago and is the first detailed study of the Irish Community in contemporary New Zealand. At the event, Professor Tiernan will present the findings of the report which will inform and facilitate the work of the Embassy and Honorary Consulate General over the coming years as we work to build ever closer links with the many Friends of Ireland in Aotearoa. ....
