Until now, the 28-year-old s identity has been protected by a court order.
In November 2019, Kempson was found guilty of murdering Millane, a British backpacker, in Auckland s CityLife Hotel in December 2018. He would later bury her body in the Waitakere Ranges. Kempson s lawyers argued at his trial that Millane s death was an accident during a form of rough s-x.

Extravagant stories
Kempson spent the years prior to his arrest moving between Auckland properties, frequently posting within Facebook groups for people hunting down flats. 
One former flatmate of Kempson s told Newshub soon after his arrest that while he was initially chatty and reasonably easy to live with , he eventually became aggressive . 
[He had] a lot of stories that very quickly stopped making sense, she told Newshub.
If you would ever question his stories he would become incredibly defensive.
The recounting of extravagant stories is consistently brought up by people who knew Kempson. 
Many were heard by the court during his trial. That includes claims that he was an oil company manager, the cousin of a prominent All Black, that he had gang connections, was friends with police officers, and had cancer. ....

Grace Millane's murderer's appeal against conviction, sentence dismissed by Court of Appeal


The man who killed Grace Millane has lost his bid to have his conviction and sentence overturned.
At an August hearing, the man s lawyer Rachael Reed QC laid out several concerns with the November trial, including about how the jury was able to deal with the question of consent when considering their verdict, if jurors were given balanced direction about expert evidence and how to weigh this up, and how evidence from other women about the man was handled.
Reed also questioned the trial judge s finding that Millane was  particularly vulnerable and that the killing had a high degree of callousness, two factors that became important in his sentencing. ....

Grace Millane's murderer makes last-minute bid to keep name suppression


Grace Millane s murderer has applied for leave from the Supreme Court to keep his name suppressed.
On Friday, the Court of Appeal is due to release its decision on his bid to appeal his conviction and sentence for killing the British backpacker. His name suppression is currently meant to lapse at the same time, unless the Supreme Court intervenes.
The killer is seeking an interim order from the Supreme Court suppressing his name.
The 28-year-old man was found guilty of murdering Millane at the Auckland High Court in November last year. In February, Justice Simon Moore sentenced him to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years. ....

Grace Millane's killer to keep name secret for now after Supreme Court judgement


Grace Millane s murderer will keep his name suppressed for now.
On Friday morning, it emerged the killer had applied for leave from the Supreme Court to keep his name secret after the Court of Appeal on Thursday declined to continue the suppression. It was meant to become public at 11am, at the same the Court of Appeal is expected to release its decision on his bid to appeal his conviction and sentence for killing the British backpacker. 
However, the Supreme Court says until it has time to consider the application, the suppression order will be extended.
