State seeks new judge in case against Winnebago County Coroner

Hintz ignored calls by county office holders to resign and ran unopposed in the Nov. 3 election. He was re-elected to another four-year term and a day later, he pleaded not guilty to 37 felony counts, including 23 counts of official misconduct, 12 counts of forgery and two counts of theft. Michelle Hintz pleaded not guilty to four counts of theft and three counts of unlawful use of a credit card. Former State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross said purchases were made with a county-issued credit card. Between April 2018 and July, the Hintzes are alleged to have used county funds for personal expenses. According to the indictments, Bill Hintz allegedly spent more than $10,000 on hotel rooms, car rentals, gasoline and tolls unrelated to official county business.

Protesters have spent 100 days outside Rockford City Hall, they have no plans to leave

ROCKFORD  For many, the start of a new year is a chance to bring new ideas and change into their lives. But the demonstrators outside City Hall are entering 2021 on the same note they left 2020.  Sunday marks 100 days and counting since the May 30th Alliance, which aims to raise awareness about racial injustices, set up its 24/7 quarters on the sidewalk outside of City Hall. Some five to seven people take turns manning makeshift tents to maintain their presence at the city government offices.   The sit-in started when protesters demanded that officer Dominik McNiece, who shot an unarmed Black man named Tyris Jones who was fleeing police on Oct. 2, be fired and also charged criminally by an independent prosecutor. Those demands were not met. But the organization, which made its presence felt most notably during the summer months at Rockford City Market, remains undeterred, and its sit-in will continue through some of the coldest months of the year.
