We have provided substantive responses to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN OHCHR) and the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC) about allegations around environment, human rights, the operation of the mine, the renewal of the Financial or Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) and the delivery of emergency back-up fuel. In the Philippines, a country with an average of 25 typhoons per year, 21 active volcanos and regular earthquake threats, addressing natural hazards requires a whole-of-society approach.
In many parts of the country, the ground is saturated with water, so even minimal rainfall causes flooding.
In Catanduanes, the 12th-largest island in the Philippines, a family whose livelihood depends on copra – dried coconut meat used to make oils – is struggling to make ends meet. Not only has the price of coconut oil steadily declined since the beginning of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the family’s coconut trees have been destroyed by the series of typhoons that have hit the area. ....
