Thank you very much. Thank you very much for being here. Im delighted to be in beautiful savannah. I have been asked to speak a little bit about myself, to say what role books have played in my life and how i first became interested in writing. I think the iorta tng i think the important thing to begin with is that i was born 1937 and have seen some important changes in american life. I graduated from Radcliffe College in 1959, which means i had a harvard education. I wish i studied more and enjoyed myself less. After college i had a terrific job as a reporter at life magazine, job i loved even though i was paid less than a man doing the same work. Life is probably where i first thought about writing as a career. I did not work again for 15 years. Ive been married twice. My first husband was fil

For three years in a row. Something else he said was good news. In a row. S trust me on this. He said the organization is hale and hearty and alive and well, and i am proud to be associated with it. What has it meant for the Civil Rights Movement that you have been involved in for your entire life and still are as the chairman of the naacp, to have a black man in elected as president of the United States. It does not mean our work is over. There is more work to be done. No one can believe that barack obama would be president of the United States if it had not been for the work of the and aa cp. Of the naacp. The work done by these people and these groups. It was like vindication that all of this la

What do you feel about the Current Supreme Court . Julian bond they are awful. They are not all awful but the majority is awful. I cant quote this exactly so i hope youll understand. You read the decision in the almart case. Justice scalia writes that business is always hire the very best people. [laughter] there is no reason they would not hire the very best people. Therefore the argument the other people are making is nonsense. If you have that kind of reasoning, how can you expect anything but garbage to come out . And garbage came out of him this time and in other decisions they made. It is a bad court. Warren olney they are going to be there for a long time. Julian bond yes they are, they are, unless someone intervenes. [laughter] warren olney you are not talking about the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee . Julian bond no, we are gone. Warren olney what happened to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee . It became a Different Organization after you found it and no

The Comfort Level in that environment they are comfortable because theyve grown up in those environments and it can make a difference. One of the major advantages to my no this was good for me when we went to in ccus and the faculty member said to us you didnt do this well enough you cannot blame it on racism, anything but ourselves. It it is interesting when you get challenged in those environments you understand that you need to respond. Respond. Unfortunately into many other environments because of the subtle racism that goes on in this country sometimes students we will wind up saying i did better i got a lower grade. Minneapolis. Weve got all four weve got all four we got all four we got all four we got all four we got all four this was also the day the president s former defense secretary james mattis went public with extraordinary criticism of how his former boss is responding to all of this and what has become of our country. While former president obama encouraged the protesters to continue making the status quo uncomfortable. Much more on all of that ahead, but we want to take a measurement of the protests around the country tonight. Beginning with Garrett Haake, who remains down in washington just off lafayette square. And, garrett, whats the attitude of the crowd tonight . I know no two evenings have been alike. Reporter yeah, thats true, brian. Today was another enormous protest here out in the streets near the white house. And today was the first day that i detected a certain element of joy perhaps coming from that arrest today. There was very much a Block Party Vibe here in d. C. During t
