Malay LGU launches probe on 'super spreader' party in Boracay

The Department of Tourism (DOT) said Malay officials issued a memorandum to conduct an investigation to the concerned business establishment where the “super spreader” event took place.
Local officials claimed that the party was the “root cause” of the recent spike in the number of COVID-19 infections on Boracay Island, which ed to the total lockdown of one of its three barangays.
Dr. Athena Magdamit, chief of the Malay Municipal Health Office, earlier disclosed in a virtual press briefing that a male worker in Boracay had close contact with a tourist from Metro Manila who was on the island from March 10 to 13. Days after leaving, the tourist tested positive for COVID-19. ....

ILOILO CITY – The surge of COVID-19 cases that led to the total lockdown of one of three barangays at world-famous Boracay Island has been traced to a party.

“The root cause of COVID-19 infection is from an event,” said Dr. Athena Magdamit, chief of the Municipal Health Office of Malay, Aklan where Boracay is located.
Barangay Balabag has been under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) while Zone 1 and Zone 7 of Barangay Manocmanoc are under surgical lockdown since April 1. ....

TOURISTS coming to Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan for vacation are required to have a barangay pass so they could be allowed to roam anywhere, a local executive said.
During a community address Friday night, April 2, 2021, Malay acting mayor Floribar Bautista said the barangay pass is meant for police enforcers to determine whether pass holders are residents or tourists.
Bautista on Thursday placed the whole Balabag village under enhanced community quarantine beginning April 1. Zones 5 and 6 of Balabag and Zones 1 to 7 of Barangay Manomanoc were placed under surgical lockdown due to rising Covid-19 cases. ....
