On January 12, 2021, Square Enix, through patent information platform J-PlatPat, published information on several trademarks applications: The Japanese Shinra Company logo, “The First Soldier”, and “Ever Crisis” – these are all terms related to Now, Square Enix didn’t make any announcement yet. However, we can make several hypotheses with the information on hand. First off, there are no guarantees these will be games, as the trademarks, as usual, cover a large range of applications. Who let this happen? Why is it happening? Are they really planning to kill Aerith off so soon? That is a possibility, especially given how Remake‘s first episode ended with the implication that any future deaths will be permanent, but it doesn’t sit quite right with us. Square Enix has gone out of their way to present Aerith as a major shaker in this retelling of the classic game, to the point of putting her up against fate itself. That’s a powerful image for one of gaming’s most memorable ladies. We don’t think they’re going to trash it by retreading old ground so soon. But that opens up the question of what Sephiroth and Aerith are going to be getting up to together that required so much filming. According to translations, actress Asuka Yoshikawa reported that the staff praised both actors, so it may be a very heavy scene. Worrying. ....
