Why the UAE will observe two Ramadans in one year


Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Member of the Arab Federation of Space and Astronomy Sciences, told
Gulf News on Thursday that the Islamic calendar is a lunar one, and consistently moves around 11 days short of the solar year. For each year that passes, Ramadan is then also moved back by 10 or 11 days, depending on the moon sighting.
“The year 2030 will witness the blessed month of Ramadan twice. The first one will take place when Ramadan will start on January 5, 2030 for the Hijri year 1451, and then again, the month of Ramadan will start on December 26, 2030 for the Hijri year 1452,” explained Al Jarwan.
“And the total days of fasting will be approximately 36 days, ....

If you’ve lived in the UAE for a while, you’ll know that the Islamic (lunar) calendar differs from the Georgian (solar) calendar, and the dates of Ramadan change each year. So, this has had us wondering, could Ramadan ever happen twice in the same calendar year?
Well, according to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Member of the Arab Federation of Space and Astronomy Sciences, yes it will. In an interview with
Gulf News, Al Jarwan explained that as the lunar calendar is 11 days fewer than the solar calendar, at some stage we will experience two Ramadans in the same year. ....

Dubai: Every year people in the UAE fast for around 14 hours give or take. But if you want to get specific with it, then you’ll notice that some UAE residents end their fast earlier in the day.
Muslims in the UAE will be fasting for the shortest time at the start of Ramadan for an average of 14 hours and 4 minutes on the first day of Ramadan, with fasts getting longer towards the end of the month and will reach up to14 hours and 46 minutes.
In 2021, Ramadan is set to start on April 12 or 13, subject to moonsighting. And each emirate will give residents a slightly different time to end their fast. ....
