The 5th Balinale International Film Festival


The fabled island of Bali will host of a number of high-profile movie-screenings as the 5th Balinale 2011 International Film Festival gets underway from November 15-20, 2011.
The Balinale Film Festival will be held at the Galeria 21 Cineplex, Mal Bali Galeria, Simpang Dewa Ruci at the Kuta Roundabout. The event is designed to offer an opportunity for local directors to showcase their talents to a global audience, while allowing international moviemakers to visit Indonesia and see its potential as a location for filming or story concepts.
Coinciding with the 19th Annual ASEAN Summit, which also takes place in Bali in November, this year the festival will feature a special highlight on ASEAN film focus that aims to promote production in the region and expose the talented individuals behind the local film industry. Santa Monica College’s Synapse Contemporary Dance Theater to Showcase New Works Online Starting May 24

Santa Monica College’s innovative and widely praised Synapse Contemporary Dance Theater, co-directed by Jae Lee and Mark Tomasic, will showcase new works created by award-winning faculty and guest artists and up-and-coming student choreographers in a free video presentation starting May 24.
The program will be available for viewing online starting at 7 p.m. May 24. A link at smc.edu//dance/events takes guests directly to the showcase.
The show features Modern, Contemporary, Postmodern, Jazz Funk, Hip Hop, Fusion, and more. The program showcases works by Synapse Co-Artistic Director Jae Lee and faculty choreographers Seda Aybay, Angela Jordan, and Roberta Wolin-Tupas. In honor of International Women’s Day, the Parrish Art Museum will present a live-stream discussion on women artists and their profound and turbulent experiences of migration through the lenses of politics, war, love, and family, on Friday, March 5, at 5 p.m.
Grace Aneiza Ali, Kathy Engel, and Ellyn Toscano will each present their work from the book “Women and Migration: Responses in Art and History” (edited by Deborah Willis, Ellyn Toscano, and Kalia Brooks Nelson), followed by a conversation moderated by Corinne Erni, Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Projects.
