Indigenous Peoples Day rejected by Portsmouth NH, keeps Columbus Day

PORTSMOUTH After a passionate plea from high school students to make a change, the City Council narrowly voted Monday to reject permanently placing Indigenous Peoples Day on the city calendar alongside Columbus Day.
Councilor Cliff Lazenby made a motion for the city to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day “instead of what has been typically designated by the state of New Hampshire as Columbus Day.
Councilor Petra Huda moved to amend the motion to give residents the choice to recognize either Indigenous Peoples Day or Columbus Day “until such time as the state and federal laws recognize the need for change or elimination of the current name.” That was later amended to permanently recognize both holidays alongside each other. It failed in a 5-4 vote. ....

Yikes! Parking Tickets Could Go Up Huge in Portsmouth

Yikes! Parking Tickets Could Go Up Huge in Portsmouth

The battle over a parking ticket fine increase is heating up as the weather becomes warmer in Portsmouth according to unionleader.com.  Currently, the fine for an expired meter in Portsmouth is $15 and they only issue one ticket per vehicle.  That means if you go over your expired time, you are only on the hook for $15, you can’t get multiple tickets adding up.  The city has a Stay & Pay program where you can park all day in certain zones for $46 or just get a $15 ticket if you choose not to.  I must admit, there is little incentive to pay the $46 when the penalty is just a $15 ticket. ....

Portsmouth resident asks city to consider implementing solar energy

PORTSMOUTH Last August, Richards Avenue resident Tom Morgan, the town planner for Seabrook, was thrilled to see that for the first time in over 130 years, renewable sources generated more energy in the United States than coal.
Portsmouth on the other hand, Morgan wrote in an August letter to city councilors, is “on the wrong side of history” relative to citywide renewable energy, despite its status as an eco-municipality.
“Portsmouth’s homes and businesses are mostly powered by Granite Shore’s coal-fired Merrimack Station in Bow and Essential Power’s gas-fired plant in Newington,” he wrote. “Eversource’s recent $126 million investment in upgrades to the transmission corridor from Madbury to Portsmouth signals the industry’s intent to keep our community dependent on fossil fuels well into the future.” ....
