Winnipeg zoo's elderly cougar Max dies after long illness


A beloved elderly cougar who had lived at Winnipeg s Assiniboine Zoo since 2004 has died.

Max was 16 years and seven months old when he was euthanized. The zoo says he was receiving specialized care for kidney failure and arthritis. More recently, he was also diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and diabetes.(Assiniboine Park & Zoo/Facebook)
A beloved elderly cougar who had lived at Winnipeg s Assiniboine Zoo since 2004 has died.
It is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing of Max the cougar. Max was 16 years and seven months old and was very loved by his care team here at the zoo, the organization said in a social media post on Saturday. ....

Max, a 16-year-old cougar at the Assiniboine Zoo, was put down by veterinary staff after failing health was affecting his quality of life, according to a Facebook post by the zoo.
The cat had been a resident at the zoo since 2004 and had received specialized care for kidney failure and arthritis. The zoo said he was also recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and diabetes.
The decision to euthanize Max came after the zoo’s veterinary team performed a quality of life assessment. The zoo said all of Max’s ailments were common in older cats, but combined were taking their toll. ....

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is taking the internet by storm and Winnipeg is no exception.
Seen at this week’s historic U.S. presidential inauguration wearing a poofy jacket and knitted mittens, striking a comically disgruntled pose, Senator Sanders has become a wintery meme sensation.
“Everybody just needed something to be happy,” said David Robin, who created several images of Sanders at iconic Winnipeg spots. 
Robin, who works in marketing, has achieved internet fame for memes in the past, like when he recreated the poster for the film “The Hangover” to feature players from the Winnipeg Jets.
