by Niall Christie RENT controls should be introduced because “timid” measures to protect tenants are not working, the Scottish Greens said yesterday following calls from Scotland’s Citizen’s Assembly. Scottish Green Party co-leader Patrick Harvie argued “rents have rapidly outstripped inflation” and called for urgent measures to support renters. He criticised the Scottish government’s “useless” and unused rent pressure zone policy and demanded more be done both during and beyond the coronavirus pandemic. In Citizen’s Assembly’s Vision for Scotland, 98 of the group’s 102 members backed a rent caps recommendation alongside other protections for tenants. Scotland’s Housing Minister Kevin Stewart acknowledged the problems with a policy introduced in 2016 giving councils limited power to restrict rent rises, which has not been used. ....
