GUWAHATI: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal (RD), two new political parties born out of the anti-CAA movement, not only failed to make a mark in the elections, but also ended up helping the BJP, their main opponent, by splitting Opposition votes.
Insiders in both the parties blamed the Congress’s decision to ally with Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF, which many caste Assamese organizations call a ‘communal party’. And this is being seen as the prime reason for votes swinging in BJP’s favour.
Only RD could open its account by sending its firebrand president and jailed peasant leader Akhil Gogoi to the assembly from the prestigious Sivasagar seat. But despite high expectations, another promising leader and former All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) general secretary, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, lost both in Duliajan and Naharkatia seats in upper Assam, which were in the vortex of anti-CAA p ....

NEW DELHI: The exit poll results for Assam that went to the polls in three phases from March 27 to April 6 to elect 15th legislative assembly are out. Most exit polls have predicted the return of BJP-led government in Assam. A party needs 64 seats to be able to form government in the state.
A poll of four exit polls have predicted 73 seats for BJP-led NDA and 52 for Congress-led UPA.

New Delhi: The counting for assembly elections in four states and a Union Territory will take place on Sunday, May 2. Even though Congress is out of power in all five, it has high stakes in Assam and Kerala where it is the main opposition party challenging the incumbents.
Interestingly, in the run up to the elections in both these states, Congress president Sonia Gandhi tasked sitting chief ministers in January with the responsibility of being senior observers to oversee poll campaigns.
