MALDEN — For 25 years, Irma found steady work as a nanny. Then, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit last March, the family she worked for no longer felt comfortable with her taking the T to their house.
Without a car, she lost her job. As an undocumented immigrant, she couldn’t receive unemployment. The bills mounted. Food. Utilities. And rent, so much rent. By late last year, Irma — who didn’t want her last name published because of her immigration status — owed $13,000 on the one-bedroom apartment she rents in Malden. ....

Safe Communities Act and what it could mean to Quincy and South Shore

BOSTON – When David Zou immigrated from China to Quincy in 1983, he spoke no English. He said back then Quincy had a small Asian population, which meant he had to go to Boston’s Chinatown for most things.
“Test prep, haircut, lawyer, groceries – I had to go to Boston,” Zou said. “There was no service for me here.”
Now as a fluent English speaker, a founding board member of Quincy Asian Resources Inc., and one of almost 30,000 Asian families in Quincy, he helps other Asian immigrants on the South Shore with translation of documents and English classes.
“It’s a very difficult process to get settled down,” Zou said. “I wish there had been an organization then that could help me.”  ....

'It's Quiet Right Now': Typically Bustling Before Lunar New Year, Boston's Chinatown Remains Emptier Amid Pandemic

Lunar New Year is the time of year that’s usually a boon for Chinatown.
But Boston s Chinatown like other Chinatowns across the country - has been racked by a constellation of economic slowdown and ramped up racism and xenophobia. And for the first time anyone can remember, no one’s expecting to see parading troupes of dancing dragons and lions ringing in the new year.
Before the pandemic, Jackie Church gave tours of Chinatown. Two evenings ahead of the day the Year of the Ox begins, the scene at the district s iconic gate is quiet.
“Typically, these streets would be full of people right now, Church says. There would be lanterns all over, lighting the way home for the ancestors to come home and have the big family reunion banquets, which are really important. ....
