After almost three years, civic body officials made the carcass utilisation plant functional on Monday. The plant was opened after a detailed discussion with residents of Noorpur Bet village, in the presence of heavy police force. Incidentally, the plant has been opened before the scheduled hearing of National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had ordered the Punjab chief secretary to appear in related proceedings. Efforts were made for almost one week to remove protesting village residents from the spot. Police force had been deployed since 3am on Monday, when officials had long talks with protesting village residents. According to local residents, the plant will cause foul odour in the area and other difficulties. Officials convinced them that the scientific process followed would address such concerns. They said that after skinning, remains of the dead animals would be used for other purposes.
