The White Tiger : The Award-Winning Book That Inspired The Netflix Movie On 1/22/21 at 3:00 AM EST The White Tiger, streaming on Netflix, is the new movie starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Set in India, it tells the story of Balram Halwai (played by Adarsh Gourav), an ambitious young chauffeur who schemes his way from poverty to success. Chopra Jonas, meanwhile stars as Pinky, the wife of the wealthy Ashok (Rajkummar Rao), whom Balram drives for. If that plot sounds familiar to readers, it is because it is based on the novel of the same name, written by Aravind Adiga and released in 2008. ....
Adarsh Gourav in The White Tiger (2021) | Netflix Aravind Adiga’s Man Booker Prize winner The White Tiger is dedicated to Iranian-American filmmaker Ramin Bahrani. Thirteen years after the publication of thenovel, Bahrani has written and directed the movie version of Adiga’s blistering satire on aspiration, opportunity and progress. The White Tiger is set in 2007 and captures some of the headiness of the decade’s promise of overnight economic success. Its exploration of the chasm between classes and the utility of crime as a shortcut to wealth is, however, timeless. The tragicomic movie is the story of the backward caste Balram Halwai, who embraces the “half-baked” label bestowed upon him to fashion a grim success story. Balram also provides the acerbic and sometimes intrusive and redundant voiceover, holding forth on the injustice done to his people, the unique nature of Indian servitude, and the qualities of Indian entrepren ....

From here, Ramin Bahrani’s adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s novel begins to feel less like an imitation of Danny Boyle’s Oscar winner and more a stinging critique of it. There’s nothing feel-good about Balram’s climb up the greasy pole. To him, modern India is a “rooster coop” where servile masses wait stupidly to be butchered and fed to the rich. We know Balram escapes from the opening scene where, as a nattily attired entrepreneur, he starts narrating his life story. It begins in the early Noughties as the impoverished Balram decides to manipulate his way into the affections of Ashok (Rajkummar Rao), the American-educated son of the wealthy coal baron who owns his village. ....
Washington City Paper The White Tiger, an Everyman Is a Scoundrel The film never quite finds the right balance of sympathy or charisma, so Balram ends up seeming sneering and awkward. Success! His debut, Man Push Cart, follows an immigrant street vendor in New York City, while Chop Shop is about a boy eking out a living in a scrapyard. The empathy in these films is unusual; they show people at society’s fringes who rarely get the star treatment. Bahrani continues that tradition with his latest film, an adaptation of the Booker prize-winning novel ....
