Benedictine Living Community Crookston: Brekken family highlighted Submitted Crookston Times Readers: Throughout the month of May, The SUMMIT Assisted Living, part of Benedictine Living Community – Crookston, is partnering with the Crookston Times to spotlight tenants who have children and/or grandchildren who work at Benedictine. This first piece, featuring Wanda Brekken, was submitted by members of the Albert and Wanda Brekken family. Wanda Brekken was born Wanda Irene Pester in 1920 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She was the youngest of six children born to Henry and Elizabeth Pester. Wanda had three older sisters, Marion, Margaret and Dorothy, and two older brothers, Harlan and Charles. She spent her early years on a farm in Johnstown ND and grew up in the depression. She didn t have a lot of clothes and didn t get hand-me-downs from her sisters as the clothes were worn out by the time, she could fit into them. The family moved to Cro ....
Submitted by Ashley Melsa Crookston Times To all of our volunteers at Benedictine Living Community Crookston Villa St Vincent and The Summit, we would like to thank you for the gift you have given us over 1,100 hours were recorded for the year 2020. With covid these hours were a little different than the years past things such as making masks for staff and peers, sending letters to our resident/tenants, writing out thank you letters to donors, sending in artwork, origami birds to hang from the gazebos, picking weeds, washing windows, window artwork, bringing in horses, outdoor caroling, classic cruiser parades, kiddie parade (outside), golf cart rides with borrowed golf carts, these are just to name some of the creative ways our volunteers have worked to continue their passions of giving back . Your faithful volunteer hours and continued dedication help bring smiles and joy to our residents, tenants, staff, and our entire community. ....
Apr 13, 2021 Dr. Cleon Michael Melsa, age 78, of Crookston, MN, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, MN, with his family by his side. Cleon was born on December 28, 1942, in Marshalltown, IA, the son of the late Charles and Cleo (Kime) Melsa. He was raised in Tama, IA, and graduated from Tama High School in 1960. Afterwards, he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, did some graduate studies at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, and earned his Master’s Degree in teaching and Doctorate in organic chemistry at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. He then went on to teach at the University of Minnesota in Crookston, MN, where he worked for the next 32 years, retiring in 2012 as an Assistant Professor. He also worked teaching chemistry at various high schools while he was doing his post graduate studies. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and held many different voluntee ....
