West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee s younger brother Ashim Banerjee died due to COVID-19 on Saturday (May 15, 2021).
According to the reports, Ashim Banerjee was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at Medica Hospital in Kolkata. The Chief Minister s brother had tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing treatment, Dr Alok Roy, Chairman, Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata informed.
In other news, on Friday, West Bengal recorded its highest single-day spike of 20,846 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally to 10,94,802. The death toll in the state rose to 12,993 after 136 more people died of COVID-19 infection on Friday, the state health department bulletin said. ....

Covid-19: Diagnostic laboratories violate rate cap for home collection of Covid test samples

A number of diagnostic laboratories are charging twice or thrice the government-stipulated rate for home collection of samples for Covid tests, most of them taking advantage of the inability of the elderly and the ailing to visit a testing centre.
A 44-year-old resident of Tollygunge had to pay Rs 3,400 and Rs 3,000 to two labs for the Covid RT PCR test for him and his wife. The amounts included the charges for collection of swab samples from home.
The state government has stipulated that a diagnostic centre cannot charge more than Rs 950 for an RT PCR test. Laboratories are allowed to charge additional money as travelling expenses for home collection of samples, but it cannot exceed Rs 15 a kilometre. ....

Cannott evict patients who test positive for Covid-19 during their stay, hospitals told

The state clinical establishment regulatory commission has said all private hospitals are “duty-bound” to treat any non-Covid patient admitted to their hospitals, who subsequently test positive for Covid-19, during their stay at the hospital.
In an audio message posted on a Whatsapp group of private hospitals on Friday, the commission’s chairperson, retired judge Ashim Banerjee, said he had come to know about a case where a patient’s family was asked to shift the patient to another hospital after the patient tested positive for Covid-19.
The patient had been admitted with other ailments and was not Covid positive during the admission. ....

Coronavirus outbreak:Govt books Covid beds at private hospitals

The state health department has decided to requisition Covid beds at private hospitals, which will be reserved for patients referred by the government.
An order issued on Saturday said 1,387 beds at 24 private hospitals across the state would be taken over for the treatment of Covid patients. Most of the hospitals are in Calcutta and North 24-Parganas, the two worst-affected districts in the state.
Some of the hospitals where beds have been requisitioned include Peerless Hospital, RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Hospital, CMRI, Belle Vue Clinic and Columbia Asia in Calcutta; ILS Hospital in Dum Dum; Charnock Hospital in New Town; and Megacity in Barasat, North 24-Parganas. The requisitioned beds will be separate from the Covid beds the hospitals have to set aside. ....
