Telecommunications companies have been licensed to register people who do not have National Identity Numbers so as to reduce the large crowds at the offices of the National Identity Management Commission, the NIMC has said.
Director-General, NIMC, Aliyu Aziz, said some other private and public organisations had also been licensed by the commission to provide NINs in order to address the crowds at commission’s offices.
This came as workers of the commission told our correspondent on Tuesday that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, had constituted a committee to address the demands of NIMC employees. ....

From afar, his long puzzled face was conspicuous. At noon on Friday, Boniface Ani and his wife, Doris, had spent over six hours at the Alausa centre of the National Identity Management Commission in Lagos, waiting for a miracle to happen in an attempt to get their National Identity Numbers.
The couple had grown weary of a crowd milling around the entrance gate of the commission sharing premises with the Lagos headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
After writing their names on a list provided by the NIMC officials, they were told to return in February for capturing as there was a backlog of previous applications on the rack. ....

NIMC Workers Ask FG To Address Their Demands Or Risk Another Strike


 
Workers of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Wednesday asked the Federal Government to take advantage of the 20-day window of the suspended industrial action to address all their demands or risk another strike by the Commission.
The Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC Chapter, Asekokhai Lucky, confirmed to Channels Television, that the meeting which was scheduled to hold with the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantanmi to address the issues has not been held, even though the workers suspended the strike in good faith.
The workers also decried the lack of adequate computers at the Commission’s Headquarters, as they insist it slows down the pace of work. ....

Stakeholders worry over SIM replacement, NIN registration policies

The Federal Government’s policy on the Feplacement of Subscriber Identification Modules and the deadline given for linking SIMs with valid National Identity Numbers are economically risky, stakeholders have said.
Also, they noted that the deadline given by government for the linking of SIMs with NINs would not be met going by the recent happenings in the sector and the crowds at the offices of the National Identity Management Commission.
On January 2, the government released a policy for the replacement of SIMs belonging to subscribers whose SIMs had been lost, stolen, misplaced or damaged. ....
