After managing a small surplus for its hybrid 2021 season, plans are nearing completion at the Shakespeare & Company for a full slate of attractions next year.
Paying little attention to the brisk wind blowing off the sun-swept field that stretches behind Shakespeare & Companyâs Tina Packer Playhouse, Artistic Director Allyn Burrows led a visitor on a brisk walk across the theaterâs spacious terrace and down a narrow path leading past the outdoor Roman Garden Theatre.
Burrows paused for a brief moment to comment on some things that will remain the same in the Roman Garden, one or two that may not, once Shakespeare & Company begins its 2021 season at 70 Kemble St. in Lenox.
Burrows then continued down the path to what will become pride of place â the outdoor New Spruce Theatre, now a sprawl of compact white fill and a cluster of towering trees that give the new space its name.
LENOX â Making good on its plans to open a new outdoor performance site in time for shows this summer, Shakespeare & Company announced this week that the 500-seat amphitheater, The New Spruce Theatre, will host theatergoers for a production of âKing Lear.â
The company, which canceled its entire live-performance season last year because of the COVID pandemic, aims to fill the new space on its Kemble Street campus at half-capacity, in keeping with state and local regulations, as well as guidance by Actors Equity and other professional unions.
The role of King Lear will be played by Christopher Lloyd, as planned last year before the pandemic forced cancellation of the live performance season.
