ST PAUL, Minnesota Dr. Artika Tyner grew up craving books with stories and protagonists that looked like her. But more often than not, she didn t see herself reflected in the books she read. 
When you re more likely to find a book with a black dog or black bear on the cover than a Black girl or a Black boy, we really wanted to make sure. we knew representation mattered. We wanted to create books that reflected our cultural history and our heritage, Tyner explained.  ....

If we re to live up to our own time, then victory won t lie in the blade. But in all the bridges we ve made, that is the promise to glade the hill we climb. If only we dare it.
That s just a small excerpt from National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman s original poem, The Hill We Climb.
Gorman stole the show at Wednesday s Inauguration Day ceremonies with her poetry recitation, becoming a household name overnight.
The young poet is inspiring writers, artists and other poets everywhere.

St. Paul nonprofit Books for Africa donates 50 millionth book
Minnesota nonprofit ships more to continent than anyone else.

Before the end of the month, a child in Ghana will receive a book called Kofi Loves Music, by Artika Tyner.
The book, a story about a little boy s love of music and family, will be the 50 millionth book donated by St. Paul nonprofit Books for Africa to students and people across the continent.
The book will travel from the Twin Cities all the way to Ghana along with thousands of other books.
Over the past three decades, Books for Africa has sent those 50 million books to all 55 African countries in hopes of ending what the nonprofit calls the book famine. ....
