The Cubs won 104 games in 1909. They finished second, 6.5 games behind the Pirates.
They won 104 games again in 1910. They won the pennant by 13 games over the Giants and 17.5 over the Pirates.
Go figure!
When the Cubs had played the Tigers in the World Series in 1908, it ended, in 5 games, on Oct. 14.
The 1910 Series, in which they faced the Athletics, did not even begin until Oct. 17. The Cubs needed a 10-inning win in Game 4 just to extend the series by a day, to Oct. 23.
But that didn t prevent the Cubs from continuing to play after the Series ended or at least try to play. ....

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1908, the Cubs defeated the Tigers, 2-0, at Detroit s Bennett Park to repeat as World Series champions.
Yet they had not seen the last of the Tigers.
