Republican Jon Costas, who had four consecutive terms as Valparaiso mayor following his time on Valparaiso City Council, defeated party competitor Art Elwood Tuesday, and will now face Democrat Hannah Trueblood, making history as the first woman on the ballot to run for mayor of Valparaiso in the November election.
Across Lake and Porter counties, voters got a hand Tuesday in crafting the November ballot, selecting their preferred candidates for mayor, clerk-treasurer and city or town council, in addition to school referendums in Highland, Lowell and Munster, though officials in both counties said turnout for the municipal primaries was low.
Voters across Northwest Indiana will have the opportunity to decide who will represent them at the local level on Tuesday as numerous cities and towns will be voting for candidates for council, clerk-treasurer and mayor.
