CITY ELECTION
125 YEARS AGO - The city-wide election on April 8, 1896, was a highly emotional contest between two competing political views. The local news media called it “a grand and glorious victory for the good people of Shawnee. It cannot be called a Republican victory for the fact that many good Democratic citizens voted for Mr. Search.”
Charles Knox, the Democrat, was elected as city clerk by 102 votes over George Boggs, the Republican. From the First Ward, Dr. H.J. Keith and Oscar Lee were selected as aldermen; Robert Reed and L.C. Thompson won their posts in the Second Ward; in the Third Ward, Charles Linn and Eastes tied and would have to be selected by lot, won by Linn; and finally, in the Fourth Ward, George Overstreet and C.C. Blake were elected. William S. Search was elected mayor by a count of 285-218 over Bob Galbreath. William K. Dodge earned the city attorney over Hammond by 35 votes. B.K. ....

Arrested in the South
Three residents of Parkersburg, and well-known characters about here, were arrested on last Monday at Winston, N.C., on the charge of robbing a large cotton mill. Their names are Frank Delaney, George Delaney and Albert Hobeck. Frank Creston, of Dayton, Ohio, was arrested with them. The men are now in jail at Winston and will be held for trial. ....

Proposed 2021 Coos budget down but county tax up

COOS COUNTY â The Coos County delegation zoomed through the public hearing on the county commissionâs proposed 2021 budget in short time Saturday morning. Held virtually, the hearing was over in an hour and a half, a far cry from the lengthy affairs of previous years.
Coos County Administrator Jennifer Fish presented the commissionâs total proposed 2021 budget of $43.1 million, a decrease of $1,944,766 or 4.3 percent over the current budget of $45.1 million.
But revenues are also down, resulting in a 7.5 percent projected increase in the amount to be raised through the county tax, from $16.3 million to $17.7 million.
Fish said she hopes to see the county tax increase reduced before the delegation meets in March to approve a final budget. She noted the commission estimated using $3 million in surplus to reduce taxes. That is $600,000 less than used last year. Fish said she should have a better sense of the actual surplus for this year by mid to late Janua ....
