So i want to begin asking you to discuss how your military background your writing of the book. Oh, okay. Well, you know, i think first of all, its important to, you know, you dont have to be have a military back ground to be a good military historian. I would say the greatest military historians havent had a military background. You look at some of the great military historians, atkinson and others, you dont have to have a military background. I do think that having extensive military experience like i do can maybe add some different perspectives to your research and writing. This interview is from the Veterans History Project and was conducted by the Atlanta History centers kenan research center. I was born and raised in a small town called gettysburg, pennsylvania, very historic place. Very small town, my whole family was there, aunts, uncles, grandparents, so it was real easy to have a family relationship. It was my Mom And Dad and three girls. I was the middle of the three girls. My dad was in World War ii, in the Army Corps of engineers, served in alaska. His brother, john, dierdorf, was a physician and he served in the European Tour in belgium and also in the korean conflict. My mothers brother, uncle, his name was jim sleigh baugh. He served on the Aris Scan any. I wanted to call it something else for a long time. So i did have service people in my family. One of the real highlights of gettysburg is memorial day. When i was a little girl, they had the Grade School kids march in the memorial Day Parade carrying flowers. And we would march in our class
