Appomattox effectively ending the civil war. This hourlong talk was part of a symposium hosted by the emerging civil war blog. There is something to the saying the best for last. Of the many books we have talked about and the authors we have talked about, i have never seen a more solid piece of writing come across my desk then i did when this first rap of the dawn of victory appeared in my inbox. We develop a manuscript and chris will work on history and when edward sent me the donna victory it was pristine. Ive never said that about a manuscript before. Remember, i get paid to help deconstruct peoples writing. Ive never seen a piece of writing more magnificent and believable. A story that is often overlooked. Forget about petersburg. It is so overlooked and so underrated and edward does such a magnificent job doing justice to an incredible phase of the civil war. Literally, the make it or break it point. It is the breaking point that leads to the end. Without further a do, i would lik ....

In the anniversaries of the civil war. This 45 minute talk was sponsored by the Shenandoah Valley battlefields foundation. Its always nice to be the keynote speaker. You can speak in a disjointed way and everyone says this marvelous. Im going to do a disjointed speaker speech for you this morning, if i may. Lets start with a couple of reflections on the confederate battle flag. If politically correct people were capable of understanding history, which they are not they , would complain not about the Southern Cross banner, they would complain about the stars and bars. The emblem of a government, with slavery as its backbone. The battle flag is different in another sense. A soldiers home was the regiment not the brigade, not , the division. In the regiment he served with friends and neighbors from the same area. What did the second, fourth, fifth, 27th, and 33rd virginia hav ....

General grants staff, there was a young captain named Robert Lincoln on his staff, and he, of course, was the son of president Abraham Lincoln, and he was here in the room. Another interesting participant in this ceremony was at least, maybe not participant, but a witness to this ceremony was this rag doll of lula mclean, youngest daughter of wilmer mclean. It was sitting on the couch when the officers came in, and they moved it to the mantel during the meeting. After the meeting, some of the officers took the doll off the mantel and began tossing it around. Captain thomas moore of general phillip sheridans staff took the doll home with him as a war souvenir. In the 1990s, the family wanted the doll to come back to Appomattox Court house, and it is now on display in the

Comes to us from the Macarthur Fund in norfolk virginia. The only thing that is really equitable in the cap thing he is overseeing would be a president ial library. That is a really significant thing. Think about what Douglas Macarthur did during world war ii during the years afterwards. He really shaped the face of the pacific in a way that no one else has. And so that repository of documents and memorabilia and artifacts is really a significant component of the 20th century. That is his day job. By 19 is still in love with the american civil war. He has since gone on to perryville hes got onto the led them inn museum norfolk at the macarthur he still goes to bed at night in dreams about the civil war.
