Sri Lanka has put the Chinese manufactured COVID-19 vaccine on hold and will use vaccine shots manufactured by the Serum Institute of India for its ambitious inoculation drive, ANI reported citing Cabinet co-spokesman Dr Ramesh Pathirana. The country kick-started its vaccination drive last month, administering vaccine shots on frontline workers. Starting March, the island is set to extend inoculation to the general public, prioritizing people over 60 years of age.

Colombo (News 1st): Members of Parliament are to be inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccine beginning tomorrow.
The Serjeant-at-Arms of the Sri Lanka Parliament – Narendra Fernando, stated that Members of Parliament would be vaccinated with the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine over 4 days from tomorrow onwards.
The vaccination drive is set to take place at the Army Hospital in Narahenpita.
Minister C.B. Ratnayake was the first Minister to be vaccinated.
Secretary to the State Ministery of Health Services Epidemiology and COVID Disease Control Specialist Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva, speaking earlier today said that the authorities were hopeful of receiving 3 million doses of the vaccine by the end of the month. He further added that discussions were underway to permit the usage of the Russian-made Sputnik vaccine as well.

The coronavirus vaccination drive kicked off in Sri Lanka today, a day after India gifted 500,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine to the island nation.
The drive began at the Army Hospital in Narahenpita as frontline workers fighting the novel coronavirus were vaccinated with the Made in India Covishield vaccines.
