Agroecological intensification in Africa and climate | Promising results in Zimbabwe

Low soil nutrient availability is largely responsible for the poor agricultural yields in sub-Saharan Africa. A study coordinated by the University of Zimbabwe and CIRAD recently showed that it is possible to boost yields while limiting emissions of nitrous oxide, a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG). These conclusions are the result of two years of measurements on maize crops given three times more mineral fertilizer than the current regional average, with a range of agricultural soil management practices.
