Unions push to ratify ILO Convention 190


4 February, 2021Since the start of 2021, three countries have voted in favor of authorizing the ratification of Convention 190 on the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work.
Latin American unions continue to work for the ratification of C190. On 17 January, Ecuador voted and approved the ratification of C190.
The Confederation of Free Trade Union Organizations (CEOSL) said that the campaign by its affiliate, the National Union of Domestic Workers and related workers, together with the National Council for Equality, UN Women Ecuador and the Simón Bolívar Andean University played a fundamental role.
On 26 January, Chile voted and approved a draft agreement requesting that steps be taken to ratify C190 and adopt ILO recommendation 206. It is a big step forward, following on CUT’s campaign, #TrabajoSinViolencia, with the participation of the International Trade Union Confederation and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES Chile). ....

Anglo American global network meeting commits to continued dialogue


10 December, 2020The IndustriALL Global Union Anglo American global network agreed to continue engaging with the multinational mining company on a framework for global dialogue to deal with critical issues and challenges affecting mineworkers at its global operations.
The meeting on 3-4 December was a follow up on progress made so far towards the proposed dialogue between Anglo American and IndustriALL, as discussed at the last network meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2019. The meeting discussed sustainable mining and acknowledged the global network’s potential to build union power in the mining sector.
 
The IndustriALL mining and DGOJP sector co-chairperson, Lucineide Varjao Soares, said that in some instances mining companies were unwilling to negotiate and resolve workers grievances. She cited the strike at Cerrejon mine in Colombia, owned by Anglo American, BHP and Glencore as an example of the refusal to negotiate with unions. ....
