The Arizona Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into microschool company Prenda and its partner EdKey over their relationship, which allows Prenda to educate children at people’s homes with little regulation.

Under the arrangement, EdKey enrolls students in its Sequoia online school and collects charter school funding from the state. The students, however, are taught Prenda s curriculum by “guides” that Prenda hires. ....

GOODYEAR, AZ — A West Valley charter school and two of its top administrators are facing felony charges, accused of stealing more than a $500,000 in tax money, and forging documents to cover their tracks, according to a grand jury indictment handed down January 20.
The indictment, filed by the Arizona Attorney General s office, accuses Incito Schools and executive directors April Black and Amanda Jelleson, of falsifying payroll records in order to obtain funds from the Maricopa County Superintendent s office, and the Maricopa County Educational Services Agency. According to the Arizona Attorney General s office, the crime occurred between November 2016, and November 2017, and involved the theft of $567,802. ....

Arizona charter school got a PPP loan, gave $10 million to shareholder

PHOENIX – Primavera online charter school, like many businesses this spring, sought help from the federal Paycheck Protection Program to weather the economic disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chandler, Arizona, school received a PPP loan of nearly $2.2 million, the largest forgivable loan among the 132 Arizona charter schools that obtained them.
But Primavera s loan appears to have been more of a bonus than a lifeline. 
The school, which like all Arizona public schools didn t lose state funding because of the pandemic, ended its fiscal year on June 30 with $8.8 million in the bank – almost double the annual payroll costs for its 85 teachers, records show. ....
