Cambodia: Outrageous conviction of five environmental activists must be overturned

6 May 2021, 10:00 UTC Responding to reports that the Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday convicted and sentenced five environmental activists, Emerlynne Gil, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Research said:  “This outrageous conviction is a blatant attempt to silence these young human rights defenders in retaliation for their peaceful work to protect Cambodia’s natural resources. This clearly violates the activists’ right to freedom of expression and constitutes an attack on all human rights defenders in Cambodia.  Mother Nature Cambodia has long stood out as one of the most effective, popular, and creative activist groups in Cambodia. More efforts to conserve Siamese crocs

Share More efforts to conserve Siamese crocs Tue, 19 January 2021 The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Cambodia) and the Ministry of Environment are planning increased efforts to conserve Siamese crocodiles within the Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary in Mondulkiri province. WWF-Cambodia’s biodiversity research and monitoring manager Milou Groenenberg said on January 19 that police have stepped up law enforcement efforts to prevent the collection of crocodile eggs and are also cracking down on illegal fishing in the area. Groenenberg said the most dangerous activities threatening the Siamese crocodile are people hunting them for their skin and meat and those who try to catch them for private farms for breeding.
