Shrimp fishing remains closed in Hoonah Sound for 2021

Alaska Fish and Game manages the area.
Hoonah, Alaska (KINY) - Alaska Fish and Game decided to extend the closure of subsistence and sport shrimp fishing in Hoonah Sound until December 31, 2021.
The fishery first closed to subsistence and sport fishing in March 2020 after annual surveys showed declines in population health of both small and large shrimp.
We had a couple bad years where commercial harvest data indicated something was going on with the shrimp population in Hoonah Sound, said Area Management Biologist for Commercial Fisheries for the Sitka Management Area, Aaron Dupuis. It indicated that the overall health of the spot shrimp stock was poor. ....
