The Summit High School wrestling season ended in difficult fashion Saturday at the 3A Region 1 meet in Pagosa Springs. Grappling with some of the state’s best veteran wrestlers, 120-pound Tigers sophomore PJ Trujillo advanced furthest in the regional bracket before back-to-back losses concluded the previously undefeated wrestler’s season. Trujillo received a bye in the first round before defeating Hunter Bercher of Rifle on a 10-6 decision. “The Rifle kid was in it the whole time, and PJ never let off the gas,” Tigers head coach Pete Baker said. After improving his record to 9-0 on the season, Trujillo lost by pinfall to state championship contender Erik Wyman of Pagosa Springs. Trujillo then lost a 3-1 decision to Brody Wiser of Moffat County in the consolation bracket’s semifinal. ....
Moffat County wrestling sure knows how to bounce back in a big way. Nearly one week after a tough weekend in Palisade in a quad dual, the Bulldogs hit the mat Thursday night in Steamboat for a triangular dual against the host Sailors and the Middle Park Panthers. Against the Sailors and Panthers, Moffat County cruised to two dominant wins, defeating the Panthers 60-24, before then sinking the Sailors 53-18 on the Sailors’ Senior Night. Opening up the triangular dual against the Panthers, Moffat County raced out to a quick 36-0 lead winning the first six matches of the night. ....
Summit Tigers sophomore PJ Trujillo won both of his matches versus his Steamboat Springs and Glenwood Springs opponents at Thursday night’s Steamboat tri meet in Steamboat Springs. Wrestling in the 120-pound weight division, Trujillo won by fall at 1 minute and 45 seconds versus Nathan Sandoval of Glenwood Springs. Trujillo also won by fall against Steamboat’s Kaleb Young at 4 minutes. Battling a shoulder injury, Summit senior leader Giovanni Marquez (113 pounds) wrestled only once Thursday night, pinning Jairo Achovarria of Glenwood Springs at 2:56. In the Tigers’ other matchups versus Glenwood Springs, Jamie Gonzalez (126 pounds) won by fall at 45 seconds versus Nathan Sandoval, Sylas Marsteller wrestled up at 152 pounds to defeat Kodiak Kellogg with a fall at 2:47, and Ethan Sicat pinned Malachi Sandoval at 2:58 in an extra, non-weight-specific match. ....
