COVID-19 claims the lives of Catholic and Anglican leaders in southern Africa

On January 4th, Bishop Moses Hamungole of the Catholic Diocese of Monze in Zambia announced via a Facebook post that he had tested positive for COVID-19 at the Monze mission hospital in his diocese. He added that he had since been transferred to the Levy Mwanawasa hospital in the capital, Lusaka. He sought to reassure everyone:
I am well taken care of here and the is no reason to worry about. I’m calm and confident to pull through this Covid19 attack. I wish to thank you for your prayers. At the same time, I want you to take Covid19 pandemic real and to urge you to follow all health regulations. Let us remain United in prayer! ....

Coadjutor Archbishop Abel Gabuza of Durban died Sunday morning after a battle with COVID-19. He would have been 66 years old on March 23.
It is with the greatest sorrow that we announce the death of our Coadjutor Archbishop, Abel Gabuza, Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier OFM, the Archbishop of Durban, said while announcing his coadjutor s death.
The archbishop had not been with us in Durban long just short of two years but in that time we came to recognize him as a gentle, caring and warm-hearted pastor, said Cardinal Napier. ....

Johannesburg - It was ironically only in August last year that Archbishop Abel Gabuza wrote a reflection on the coronavirus pandemic.
“The call for us today in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic is to continue the journey of staying spiritually healthy,” he wrote.
On Sunday, however, Covid-19 claimed the life of the coadjutor archbishop of Durban since December 2018, and former bishop of Kimberley. He was 65.
Born one of six children on March 23, 1955, in Alexandra, Joburg, Gabuza would always highlight the role of his parents in his life. ....

South Africa’s Archbishop Gabuza is dead.
The Church in Africa has lost yet another of its Shepherds. Coadjutor Archbishop Abel Gabuza of the Archdiocese of Durban passed on Sunday morning after a battle with COVID-19.

South Africa’s Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier OFM, the Archbishop of Durban, has announced his Coadjutor’s death, Archbishop Abel Gabuza.
A tremendous loss to the Church
“It is with the greatest sorrow that we announce the death of our Coadjutor Archbishop, Abel Gabuza,” Cardinal Napier said. Archbishop Gabuza died at Hillcrest Hospital at 11.45 on Sunday morning, said the Cardinal.  He added, “The Archbishop had not been with us in Durban long -just short of two years- but in that time we came to recognise him as a gentle, caring and warm-hearted pastor. Through his gentleness, caring and warmth, he made an immediate impact on everyone who was privileged to make his acquaintance. That’s an added reason ....
