UAE becomes the first Arab country to reach Mars – Ya Libnan

Share:
UAE’S Mars mission, named AMAL the Hope probe, reached Mars’ orbit at 7:42 p.m. Tuesday local time and sent a signal back to Earth. This makes the UAE the first Arab country and the fifth globally to reach the red planet. It took it 204 days and more than 480 million to get there .Experts estimated the chance of successfully entering Mars’ orbit at about 50%, since more than half of all Mars missions actually fail. The crucial time window was a terrifying and suspenseful 27 minutes during which the Hope probe had to dramatically slow down from its speed of 100,000 kilometers per hour (62,137 mph) to 18,000 kph by firing its six thrusters for 27 minutes exactly. ....

UAE Hope Probe Mars Mission: How to watch the event

File picture
In an historic day for the nation, the UAE’s Hope Probe Mars Mission is due to enter the Red Planet’s orbit, with the manoeuvre starting from 7:30 pm UAE time.
The Probe has to slow down in a highly complex procedure called the Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI) to achieve entry.
The MOI will last an uninterrupted 27 minutes. Nearly half of the fuel will be spent to slow the Hope Probe down enough to capture Mars’ orbit.
During this time, the speed of the spacecraft will decelerate from its cruising speed of 121,000 kmph down to 18,000 kmph.
The Hope Probe approaches Mars with such a velocity that it will slingshot around it and continue into deep space if it hasn t slowed down to the level where it can be captured by the planet s gravity. ....

Hope Probe reaches Mars today: Here s what happens next
On Tuesday, February 9, the UAE s Hope Probe will finally complete a seven-month journey to the Red Planet and arrive at Mars - the first of three space missions attempting to do so this month.
ALSO WATCH:
Entering another critical phase in the mission, it will attempt the Mars Orbit Insertion - a process that will take a nail-biting 27 minutes with experts predicting a 50 per cent success rate.
A lot of firsts are being marked with the success of the UAE s mission. Here s what to expect going forward. ....

Live: UAE Mars Mission – Hope Probe enters final phase of journey

-
The UAE’s Hope Probe will begin the toughest part of its journey to enter Mars’ orbit today at 7.42 pm (UAE time).
The Mars Orbital Insertion process, which will last 27 ‘dark’ minutes, is the most critical aspect of the mission, with details expected by around 8.10- 8.15pm.
Nearly half of the fuel will be spent to slow the probe down enough to capture Mars’ orbit. The fuel burn will last approximately 30 minutes and reduces the speed of the spacecraft from over 121,000 km/h to approximately 18,000 km/h.
Since the Mars Orbit Insertion phase is as critical as the launch phase, the spacecraft will need to be commissioned again and the instruments onboard tested before the transition to science phase, according to the Emirates Mars Mission website. ....

MEED | Hope Probe's fate to be decided by 27-minute burn

With a countdown of just two days to go until the UAE’s first-ever interplanetary mission arrives at Mars, the Hope Probe is now approaching the most critical stage of its historic, seven-month, 493 million kilometre journey through space.
For everyone involved, from the scientists to the operations team to the millions of fascinated stargazers across the Arab world, the evening of 9 February will be nail-bitingly tense as the probe performs a 27-minute deceleration ‘burn’ some 2,363km from the surface of the Red Planet.
The spacecraft, which launched from Japan’s Tanegashima Island on 20 July 2020 after several days of bad weather, is set to capture into Mars orbit on Tuesday evening at 7.42pm, UAE time. ....
